True Knowledge enters the semantic search ring

A new search engine give real answers and does what Google can’t. Understanding the real meaning of your question. Will this become the next Google killer ??

True Knowledge is previewing (in private beta)a new search engine that deliver answers rather than a list of statistically relevant links as in most search engines. Type in “Is Jennifer Lopez single?,” and the engine disambiguates the term “single,” and produces a correct, structured response.

In addition, it presents the facts on which the answer is based, which users can correct if erroneous. An unambiguous version of what the engine thinks you asked is also shown, as well as standard Web search results. The system infers answers from knowledge in its database, which comes from external databases and users who add knowledge. The engine back end does semantic analysis and builds structure and concepts around the data.The integrity of the database is influenced by users, who can remove incorrect facts or malicious data, and the system can eliminate data that is semantically incompatible with other knowledge that is used, said company founder William Tunstall-Pedoe.

The True Knowledge engine can respond to shorter search queries or entity names, for which it produces a profile. Users can add new profile templates for any class of object, and add knowledge in plain English.

In addition, external computers can query the knowledge base and get results via APIs. For example, a computer could ask for local time or geolocations based on IP addresses.

According to Tunstall-Pedoe , True Knowledge has developed a ways to capture information as discrete facts that can be understood by machines. “This creates a knowledge-base that is capable of learning, deducing the answer to a question from the information it already has and adding new information gained from interaction with the questioner to expand the depth and breadth of its knowledge,” he said in a press release.

Tunstall-Pedoe calls himself an AI software developer and entrepreneur, and he is known for developing Crossword Maestro and Anagram Genius, which use AI techniques to solve word puzzles.

The technology concepts used in True Knowledge are similar to what Powerset, is doing with natural language, semantic search and user-contributed metadata, and in the same vein as semantic Web-oriented startups, such as Metaweb and Radar Networks.

“True Knowledge is a threat to Google and other search engines that rely on keyword search, as well as to natural language-based search companies,” said Radar Networks CEO Nova Spivack. “In addition, it may be a new approach to building or at least leveraging public knowledge bases, such as the Wikipedia, or what Metaweb is making.”

“Our Twine application is focused on helping individuals and groups manage and share their knowledge — rather than public knowledge –so I don’t see any overlap with True Knowledge. But it could be something to connect with later on,” he added. “It is too early to tell whether True Knowledge is using or supporting W3C open standards for the Semantic Web, but if they do, then they are positioned to be the leading public knowledge base on the Web. If they don’t then they will become just another silo of data. One thing is clear however, 2008 is shaping up to be the year of semantics.”

Of course, for now True Knowledge is somewhat of a cipher given that it is not accessible to the public to test out its claims of machine intelligence. The company is based in Cambridge, England, and was recently funded wtih $1.2 million by Octopus Ventures.

Q. So what made you get started with AdSense?

A. I was looking for a way to monetize some of my websites. AdSense is such an easy thing to get started with the eye for it would be a great way to start earning more money without actually putting into much more effort. I think as soon as you see the first earnings coming into your account you get addicted to AdSense. I know is what happened to me and since then I’ve just spent time working out how to earn more and more each day.

Q. How much do you make with AdSense?

A. Some days I can earn close to $1000 and others it’s less than that. But it all comes down to how much time and effort you devote to creating a quality site that people like visiting. AdSense is not what my business is based on by any means – but it is a great way to earn revenue almost on autopilot.

Q. What is the biggest mistake people making with AdSense?

A. Probably the biggest mistake people make is thinking the AdSense earnings are easy to achieve. It is very easy to get started but as I learned it takes a lot of effort to increase your earnings. I got really downhearted whenever I would log in to my account to see that I had only made a few dollars. And that’s when I decided to spend months and months of my time learning everything I could about AdSense.

I basically buried myself away and devoured every single piece of AdSense information I could find. I ran thousands of AdSense tests and started to see a dramatic effect on my click through ratio and therefore on my earnings.

This is why I’d decided to record the videos – because I knew that it would help people who were in my position to also increase their earnings. I’ve read an absolute ton of AdSense e-book’s but they take so long to go through and always seem to keep information back.

Than I opened a small pdf with explanation on Pay per Click, very basic, no strategies explaned, bu it contained a few links to unknow search engines to me, and then I opened the core pdf and it was not until the mid of the book that I got excited, because it gave me some ideas how to get money out of this package.

For me it is not so much the explanations about how to make an UGLY landing page that are valuable in this book. But the links to where to buy cheap traffic and sell it high . And a few tips how to lure people in clicking on expensive links, that will bring you money in the pocket.

Like most of you, Jeremy Schoemaker has -at one time or another – fit squarely into each and every one of the above categories. Now, however, he’s most widely known simply as ‘Shoemoney’ .

We managed to catch up with Jeremy at the Blog World Expo last week and pick his brain about what he considers to be some of the most important factors to keep in mind if you’re trying to make money online.

In his video interview with Abby Prince, Jeremy was talking specifically about blogs and how to monetize them. As it turns out, he thinks the real money in blogs is in affiliate networks. “If you’re going to blog about something and link to it” Shoe says, “you might as well get credit for that link”.

But here’s the catch and why I think there’s something to the interview for anybody doing business online – not just bloggers. In order to be successful, you sometimes should basically put the thought of money in the back seat. Jeremy said, again specifically addressing bloggers that the typical goal of bloggers is to get new readers and generate RSS subscribers.

If you are just writing posts or making blog entries about affiliate deals for that day, your readership is quickly going to be turned off and over time, your numbers will suffer. True for bloggers but also just as true for anybody with a website and any kind of ads – affiliate or otherwise.

Jeremy cited the goal of bloggers as being basically building a reader base (aka traffic) and cautioned against turning off your base with bs promotional posts (aka bad/excessive ads).

Most of us aren’t just working online for the warm fuzzy feeling it gives us at the end of the day. At the same time, you have to remember that your subscribers, readers, end users and/or customers aren’t just using the internet for the sheer joy of reading ad copy and clicking links that make you money.

So yes, advertise. Do create content that you are interested in. Create content your audience is interested in. And by all means use relevant affiliate links and/or sell your ad space to sponsors that make sense to be there with your content.

Your traffic is there for your content, not to make you money. If your user-centric content becomes too obscured or too diluted by your revenue-centric content… your users will go elsewhere.

If you wake up one morning and notice that your traffic is trending in the wrong direction… take a look at your site from the user’s perspective. Does your site have more sponsored buttons and banners than a NASCAR? Might be a problem. Prioritize and eliminate. Do you have ads and links up for Secure Servers and Web Hosting on your outdoor furniture site? I don’t care what their payout is… it’s costing you credibility and in the long term… money. Go find a sponsor that makes more sense. Sure they may pay a little less, but they aren’t going to turn off your userbase nearly as much – and they’ll probably convert better over time.

So when Shoemoney says one of the biggest secrets to making money is putting money in the back seat… this is exactly what he’s talking about. Your userbase is your greatest commodity. If you take care of your userbase, your userbase will take care of you. Building that userbase is a tough thing. Are you really willing to roll the dice on losing a chunk of them just to make a few extra buck this month?

What better way to make money online than to write a blog about making money online? Jeremy Schoemaker, a 33-year-old Web entrepreneur, did just that.

The half hour he spends each day writing ShoeMoney attracts 20,000 unique visitors daily, brings in $12,000 a month, and gives him a platform from which to launch his own Web products.

If ever anyone can be considered an Internet marketing superstar, ShoeMoney would be near the top of the list. Jeremy Schoemaker is a search engine marketer who knows how to take advantage of both Google AdSense and AdWords. In the above photo, you see him with the biggest Google AdSense check he has ever received from Google. The income was earned back in the month of August 2005. Since then Mr. Shoemaker has moved to wire transfers. No doubt, he got tired to dealing with the bank tellers when trying to deposit $100K plus checks every month.

Unlike the other Google whores on this list, ShoeMoney, as he likes to be call, does not own just one site. He makes his enormous Google checks using hundreds of sites and thousands of domains.

His other Web businesses—AuctionAds , which displays ads for live eBay auctions on relevant sites, and NextPimp.com, which sells ringtones—are his main ventures; the blog accounts for only 3% of his company’s revenue. Other companies selling to businesses find a ripe audience of aspiring Web entrepreneurs reading ShoeMoney, which consistently ranks among the 100 top blogs on Technorati. Schoemaker had no ads on the blog until January, 2007, and the five spots sell out quickly. “We’ve never had an open advertising spot,” he says. “We have a waiting list.”

Yes Google adsense has been cracked by an indian engineer !

No it is not a scam this time. An indian engineer reversed the javascript code on it’s own server to get 5,000$ on his account (Nothing like the get Google ads free scam )

Digit Nov 2007 Issue The indian magazine DIGIT prooved that “Google Adsense” contains a serious security hole.

Manish Arora found a way to reverse engineer the Adsense engine and put several thousand of $ on his account in one month.

This is explained on his blog and was confirmed by Digit.

This not good news, not for adsense publishers who get unfair disadvantages, and of course not for Google account Adwords holders, who have to pay for getting no real clients.

How did he do this (note the 18,29$ eCPM -not bad !):

Quite easily:

After opening an account with a Blog that he didn’t own and that contained enough good convincing content (but no Google Ads), he analysed the javascript and simulated on his server the human behaviour . His words:

After going through all those articles and analyzing Google’s code I found a way to simulate human behavior in click generation and page impressions in proper (acceptable) ratio from different geographic location (IP address) and was able to credit thousands of dollars in my AdSense account (By not a single human being generated click).

Digit cracked the code by sending video that when opened simulated a click.

Manish Arora with the help of an html parser and by simulating the javascript Google has on his servers was able to imitate it on his own servers and crack the system.

As he explains:

Google is protecting there ads from sniffing or spoofing with browser’s security feature of not allowing cross domain scripting. If we can access links in Google’s IFRAME then we can traverse ad links programmatically and can make money. That’s it… we got the key of making money!!!

But how it’s possible??? Very simple prepare and execute this URL on your web server and send the resultant HTML page which has Ad links to the client. In this case you can break the limit of cross domain scripting and earn thousands of dollars.

Wow, it won’t take long unscrupulous hackers will do the same, don’t you think?
