For Internet marketing, it’s all about linking up with others

Links are the currency of the Internet. The more you have, the better off you are and the more traffic your Web site is likely to receive. The practice of acquiring more links to your Web site is called “link building.”

In short, link building is nothing more than securing links to your Web site from other reputable sites, such as referring partners, local businesses, the chamber of commerce, local directory sites and the like.

For local businesses, here are some link-building tactics that you can start tomorrow:

 

  • If you’re a member of the local chamber of commerce, or any local business group, make sure to ask for a link to your Web site in their online business directory. 

     

  • Start a “Web ring” of links among the businesses in your office park, complex or suites. Create a link page on your Web site so that you can reciprocate the favor with your new Web site partners. 

     

  • Join the Better Business Bureau and receive a link to your Web site. 

     

  • Sponsor any events? Ask for a link from the Web sites of any local organizations that you’re involved with. 

     

  • Do you send out any press releases? They provide an opportunity to announce your practice and your Web site, and if submitted to an online service like PRWeb, they provide a link back to your site from a relevant page. 

     

  • Outbound links. Search engines like Web sites that link to others! Don’t forget to reciprocate with your link partners and at minimum set up a link page to your favorite online resources and local business relationships.
