Links are the currency of the Internet. The more you have, the better off you are and the more traffic your Web site is likely to receive. The practice of acquiring more links to your Web site is called “link building.”
In short, link building is nothing more than securing links to your Web site from other reputable sites, such as referring partners, local businesses, the chamber of commerce, local directory sites and the like.
For local businesses, here are some link-building tactics that you can start tomorrow:
Link building is significant part of Internet marketing and this is just an introductory class. If you’re looking for master class content, I suggest reading this article, “101 Link Building Tips to Market Your Web site” (www.seobook.com/archives/001792.shtml ).

Search Engines Rankings Ups and Downs. How to connect semantically different sites together
November 6, 2007 . By David Norden.
I am personnaly very happy with the new Google Dance. I have kept most of my PR’s and many of my sites are now indexed in Google, like many of the new sites I created only a few months ago (like this site and freshlet.com ) . I have seen my general fresh traffic for all my sites getting up with +/- 30 %. I did this by linking the elements that are semantically related to each other, and by adding new pages to existing sites that have a relevance to other sites, and by including in these pages links to the new (or old) sites.
To improve the ranking of my “news weather” site, I added a page to my diamond site and called it Diamonds weather, the subject is related to Diamonds, Africa And weather on that page is a link to another of my sites related to African News, that when followed by the Google bots will be indexed, making all three sites relevant to each other.
This is how it looked on the Diamond website :
De Beers uses Zeppelin and discovers diamond weather
This Zeppelin NT airship can provide geophysical survey data to help diamond prospecting companies. Stefan Kuna captured this spectacular Zeppelin lightning diamond weather strike near Jwaneng, Botswana

GG Score, not a natural quality. Happy Scarry Halloween …
by David Norden, November 1, 2007
An insider at Google showed a screen capture used by the commercials working on Google Words. The numbers have been changed. Would be interesting to know how much your site is worth ! When will it be in Google Labs ???

Source Zoorgloob
I guess the GG is the virtual value Google puts on the sites but it is not sure, ADV yes/no is probably just telling if the site seems suited for ads, Vertical the possible Ad categories (a bit like in DMOZ ) and PVs some traffic indication.
According to Matt Cutts it is just a tool to find new prospective clients and give them a priority rank. Let’s hope so, …. Big brother is watching your wallet …
The fact is Google is the biggest advertising business on earth at this moment and they feed information to potential clients that’s deliberately misleading to stop people from gaining an unfair advantage with their search rankings, so that the commercials at Google can give “better advice”.
It now appears that, in fact, Google assigns an estimated worth to each ranking on their pages (much better than to know your PR 0 to 10) - visible to members of their AdWords sales team they use the information from your PPC campaigns and analytics package in order to figure out whether you’re worth it, for every page in your site.
We should better try to gain advantage by understanding how search engines are working.

What is wrong with paid linking and selling links on your site ?
By David Norden, october 30, 2007
For sure Google financial interests are getting more and more in the way of a logical good search result with “algorithms”.
Where I can understand that they don’t enjoy that directories with high PR are selling links on there sites (but who is reading these directories if it isn’t the search engines ??)
I wouldn’t see wrong doing if I was selling a link on a page going to a site with related content.
After all this is why we are doing business, no ? Of course Google can see this as something that will keep adsense clients away … since websites with a good ranking don’t need to pay with adword to get a visitor.
If the content of the page is not relevant to the link I usually put the tag rel=”nofollow” like in this code example:
<a target=”_blank” href=”http://www.webpronews.com:80/insiderreports/2007/10/29/yes-google-admits-torching-your-pagerank” title=”webpronews” rel=”nofollow”>
So if you want to increase your PageRank and don’t want to be penalysed for getting some paid link, use from time to time the rel=”nofollow” tag when the content is not relevant to your page, and don’t put paid links on a page with a high PR if the site you are promoting is not relevant to the page content. Better to sell link, sell a complete page with interesting reading content about the product your client is selling, it won’t look as if the client paid, and everybody will be even more happy.

Yes, Google Admits Torching Your PageRank
Submitted by David A. Utter on Mon, 10/29/2007 – found at webpronews
Paid links proved the PageRank undoing for search professionals as well as for prominent sites like The Washington Post, but only recently did Google confess to doing this.
The flaming wreckage of Google’s update took down several sites a couple of PageRank notches. Though it looked like an intentional change, that hadn’t been confirmed.
Until now, that is. Search Engine Journal heard from Matt Cutts about the update, which has had numerous online industry pros in a tizzy. Said Matt:
The partial update to visible PageRank that went out a few days ago was primarily regarding PageRank selling and the forward links of sites. So paid links that pass PageRank would affect our opinion of a site. Going forward, I expect that Google will be looking at additional sites that appear to be buying or selling PageRank.
The PageRank plunge has been painfully obvious to people like Andy Beard and Darren Rowse. It puts an image of an old joke about morale in our minds: “the beatings will continue until morale improves.”
As for PageRank improving, there aren’t any instructions about that. But paid links won’t be in the equation, it seems.

Reciprocal links are not dead. Weren’t dead before. Aren’t dead now. I know it and you know it. But for just a second let’s pretend otherwise.
reciprocallinksarenotdead A while back there was quite a bit of scare mongering going around the SEO industry about how reciprocal links were dead. I had a potential client once tell me that so-and-so-big-name-in-the-SEO-industry told them that reciprocal links were dead. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it here again. There is nothing wrong with reciprocal links. It’s all about how you use/implement them that matters. No, reciprocal links are not dead and now I have the proof.
Last year I decided to run my own test so I could refute what I already knew to be true. Yeah, I know who cares about reciprocal links now, right? The fear tactics have run their course and, frankly, nobody is engaged in old-school mass reciprocal link swapping (for the love of God people, if you’re still doing that, knock it off!) But for the sake of science and posterity, I now, over a year later, present the results of my (almost forgotten) reciprocal link test.
On one of my sites I created a master testing page. From this page I linked to eight new pages created specifically for this test. Each of those pages contained a few paragraphs of content with the word “reciprocallinksarenotdead” linked to an external web site. The goal was to watch the search results to see what sites appeared in the SERPs for our test term.
For the sake of creating a good testing ground, we linked to four sites that linked back and four sites that didn’t. From here we split things up even further by linking to two sites in each group to that we considered to be “high authority” for their industry, and two that we considered to be “lower authority” for their industry. We then split this again using one to link using the target site’s keyword in the link and the other not. Got all that? No? OK, let me put it to you this way (the links below take you to the test pages):
Links to reciprocal linking sites
Link to non-reciprocal linking sites
I started out checking up on this daily seeing if Google, Yahoo or MSN cached the pages linking out and then watching if/when they showed up in the SERPs. The result was quite a roller coaster ride. One day the test pages would be cached and the next day the cache date was from several days prior. This happened frequently. The same thing with the SERPs. One day
all the test pages would show up and the next day gone and then the next day just some of the test pages showed up and the next others, but not necessarily the ones from the previous day. It was interesting to watch. After about several weeks of daily monitoring I started to cut back to every few days, then weekly then, well I kind of forgot about it with the occasional thought “Hey, I wonder how that test is going”, in which I’d take a quick look and forget all about it again. Here we are now, over a year later and I think I can confidently display the results as definitive.
Note: These were the results as of Friday, July 12, 2007, I notice that there has been some shifting in results since then, so your mileage may vary.
Google supplemental results show the remainder of the testing pages. Missing from SERPs: High authority, non-reciprocating site
Missing from SERPs:
We can conclude from that that, all things being equal, reciprocating links have no more or less value than one-way links. Yeah, I know, we all read Matt Cutt’s post about how excessive reciprocal linking can hurt, and I’m sure Matt is right. But the key word there is “excessive”. If all you do is look for low-quality reciprocal links that ad no value to any user’s experience then, yes, that can, and should do you some harm. But don’t be afraid of reciprocation. If someone links to you out of kindness, feel free to link back to them out of gratitude. It’s not going to hurt you one bit and the link to you won’t be devalued. Just be sure you’re adding value, not reciprocating for the sake of reciprocating.
So what do you think? Is this test conclusive or an exercise in futility?

I’ve seen them work myself, and agree with the test. What’s interesting is that each engine put a low authority site on top. And per the first 5, Yahoo’s results were best (high authority and test page). But there’s another point for reciprocals: networking. My blogroll is a source of great links in the future too
. Last point: I still get [spam] emails, from one site in particular, asking for reciprocals. Irrelevant niche, and just doing it for SEO. They’re so dumb, I actually pity them. (I don’t normally insult people in public fora, but they spammed me, so I’ll relax my rules momentarily…)
